Getting a Shorter Headphone Cable Will Change Your Life

Getting a Shorter Headphone Cable Will Change Your Life

If you wear headphones, your pocket is too full. It's already got your phone in it, and then, to keep it from flopping useless against your thigh all day, you've stuffed the remainder of your overlong headphone cable in there as well, maybe rolled up neatly or wrapped around the phone, but most likely just jammed in like a handful of shoelaces. This isn't really ideal. It's also highly fixable.

The answer is that you just, you know, buy a new cord. A cheap new cord! One that's shorter. Really, they're like five bucks on Amazon, maybe ten, or two. You can even get a different color and flash. All of them work (and sound) exactly the same. Yet it seems pretty uncommon that anyone actually does this. Which raises the question, WHY THE HELL NOT?

Actually, go ahead and buy a whole bunch of cords of different lengths. Just having a few lying around where you use them?one at your desk at the office, one or two in your backpack, maybe one in a jacket pocket?makes the actual act of plugging in your headphones and listening to them so much more pleasant. It sublimates your cans from a utilitarian piece of stock gear to a custom-fitted little piece of joy. If that sounds extreme?maybe it's extreme?think about how much you like well-tailored clothes or a perfectly fitted chair. Oh, this length of cord is fitted almost exactly from the side of my head to my hip pocket. Things that fit you perfectly are wonderful, especially ones you've picked out to replace something cumbersome and idiotic.

Somehow, not all headphones, even expensive ones, have a detachable cord on the cups. Many just force you to live and die (and die and die and die) with the cord they come with. That sucks, not just because you can't switch out lengths?like say, a longer cord for your armchair at home, or a medium-sized cord for your desk?but because the male end that ends up in your pocket is the most common point of failure in headphones (though DIY fixable with a solder gun and a $3 new jack). So probably keep that in mind when picking out your next pair of headphones.

Life is more or less a droll succession of inconveniences, which often as not you just deal with and walk headlong into, like a front lawn full of rakes. It's worth the 10 bucks or so to make this very simple thing that you use every day that much more enjoyable.

Getting a good night's sleep is a nightmare for many Americans

June 29, 2013 ? Summer means more hours of daylight and for many, it contributes to trouble falling asleep. More than 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, resulting in $18 billion in cost to employers due to sleep loss issues."The inability to get a good night's sleep can be a complex issue, and is not as simple to cure as telling people to count sheep," says John Wilson, MD, neurologist at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, part of Loyola University Health System. Wilson regularly works with the sleep lab to diagnose patients with chronic sleep issues.

Omar Hussain, DO, pulmonologist at Gottlieb who is board certified in sleep medicine says, "Many societal trends such as working from home or swing shift workers have economic-based lifestyles that prevent regular sleep patterns." Obesity, which was recently declared a disease by the American Medical Association, also has a direct link to poor sleep, says Ashley Barrient, RD, who counsels patients at the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery and Bariatric Care. One-third of all Americans are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Here are some healthful tips from Loyola medical experts Wilson, Hussain and Barrient on how to get a better night's sleep.

Do this:

Relax. "At least one hour before bedtime, start quieting down and relaxing. Don't exercise or engage in vigorous acitvities," says Wilson.

Turn off the handheld devices. "The need to text and email is a real problem for many when it comes to sleep," says Hussain. "Turn the electronic device off and put it in another room. That way, if you wake up in the middle of the night, you don't automatically reach for the phone but instead turn over and fall back asleep."

Read a magazine. "Lighter content and shorter articles are ideal," says Wilson. "Many like entertainment and celebrity-focused magazines as quick bedtime reads."

Darken the room. "Close the curtains or blinds; darkness is conducive to sleep," says Wilson

Diminish noise. "Use a sound machine to create white noise or experiment with soothing noises such as rain or the lap of waves," says Hussain.

Create a comfortable environment. "A consistent room temperature, bedding and mattress and even sleepwear should all be appropriate to the season and comfortable," says Hussain.

Go to the bathroom. "Waking up to use the bathroom is a complaint of many," says Wilson. "Do not eat or drink several hours before bed to avoid sleep interruptions from toileting."

Check medications. "Some people who take medications before bed may do better to take them in the morning when they wake up or vice versa," says Wilson. "Talk to your physician about changing your pill dosing schedule."

Write it down. "Jot down worries, future errands or simply what is on your mind before bed," said Barrient. "This helps to allay anxieties, organize thoughts and prepare for sleep."

Have a regular routine. "Try and go to bed at the same time every night to buiid routine and consistency," says Wilson.

Limit animals. "Pets may be comforting and companionable, but if they move in the night and make noise, they disturb sleep," says Wilson.

Partner with your partner. "Talk to those you live with and share your strategies," says Hussain. "You need to get the cooperation of those in the entire household to be successful."

Reserve the bedroom. "Train the body and mind to associate the bedroom with relaxation and sleep, not watching TV, playing games or exercising," says Wilson.

Stick with the new routine. "You may not change sleeping patterns overnight so give it a few weeks to acclimate your mind and body and establish the new habits," says Barrient.

Don't do this: Eat two hours or less before bed."If you bave to have something, try a small cup of hot chamomile or other decaffeinated tea," says Barrient.

Have an alcoholic drink. "Alcohol does induce sleep but it is not restorative sleep," says Wilson.

Watch TV or play electronic games before bed. "And don't turn them on if you awaken in the middle of the night," advises Hussain.

Many people with sleeping disorders undergo sleep studies and are diagnosed with chronic sleep apnea. Medical devices such as a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine pumps oxygen into the passages by way of a mask to keep the airway open. "Often it is the partner of the person with sleeping troubles who cannot stand the snoring or the irritability and issues an ultimatum for the person to get help," says Wilson. "When one person has a chronic sleep disorder, the whole family suffers."

AirBoxLab Wants To Tell You What's In The Air You're Breathing ? But Do We Even Want To Know?

VideoPic9Indiegogo project AirBoxLab, based out of Paris, France, is hoping to build the "Nest for air quality" with its sensor device that monitors and reports on how much VOC, CO2, CO, and particulate matter is circulating in the air you breathe every day. The sensors would also report on temperature and relative humidity, but the focus would be on keeping you up to date on your indoor air quality.

Twenty-seven-year-old Carlos Ortiz appeared Friday in North Attleborough court. He has been ordered held without bail until a July 9 hearing.

Before the arraignment, Ortiz's attorney, John Connors, said he spoke to his client for the first time Friday when he was returned from Connecticut. Ortiz was arrested Wednesday.

Connors declined to comment when asked whether Ortiz was cooperating with authorities and what he knows about the killing of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.

Connors said he doesn't know the details of his client's relationship with Hernandez except that both are from Bristol, Conn.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Lloyd's slaying.

Santorum: Rubio?s support of immigration bill could hurt presidential prospects

Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is quietly laying the groundwork for another presidential run, said on Wednesday that Republican presidential hopefuls who support the federal immigration overhaul will struggle to find support among the party's primary voters in 2016.

During an interview on the Andrea Tantaros radio show, Santorum said lawmakers like Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a lead author of the Senate bipartisan immigration bill, would suffer "consequences" for supporting the bill if they choose to run for president.

"The issue of immigration and respecting the rule of law in this country is a very important thing for Republican voters across the country. The idea that there are Republicans in Washington, D.C., who are going to say, 'Well, the rule of law isn't that important, the idea of people coming into this country have done so illegally and we're going to basically treat them the same as people who came here legally,' is just not going to go over well in a Republican primary," Santorum said when asked specifically if Rubio's support for an immigration overhaul would hurt his chances in 2016. "I think there's going to be certainly consequences for folks who don't understand the importance of the respect for the rule of law that Republicans have."

Conservatives have criticized Rubio for his work on the immigration bill, which offers a pathway to legality for immigrants living in the country unlawfully. Rubio said on Tuesday that he plans to announce a decision on a presidential run in 2014.

When Santorum first ran for president in 2012, he won the popular vote in 11 primary and caucus elections. Although he conceded the race to Mitt Romney in April 2012, Santorum has continued to advocate for his ideas through a nonprofit group and give speeches in Iowa regularly. Santorum announced last week that he has joined EchoLight Studios, an entertainment company that produces faith-based films, as CEO.

In the interview with Tantaros, Santorum said he was "very open" to running for president again.

"The position I've taken here at this movie studio, EchoLight, has not in any way changed my thinking on running again in 2016. I'm very open to that. I think that, in fact, that some of the work that I'm doing at the movie studio is actually in concert with that," he said. "I think this is probably a good way to spend my time and energy potentially between two runs."

Santorum even took an early jab at possible Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton when asked about her handling of the attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya, while she was secretary of state.

"I don't think she's the right candidate for the country, and I'm hopeful that if you look at her entire record, that it precludes her," Santorum said.

Must See HDTV June 24th 30th

The NHL and NBA playoffs have wrapped for the year, so we're officially into summer vacation programming. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Dexter
Everyone's favorite serial killer is back for an eighth and final season on Showtime this weekend. Even if you think the show itself should've been dismembered and dumped in the harbor a couple of seasons ago, it will be interesting to see if a department full of cops can finally figure out there is a killer right underneath their noses. Check after the break for a couple of trailers for the new season.
(June 30th, Showtime, 9PM)

Catfish
After a successful first season and Heisman runner-up Manti Te'o's embarassing revelation, it seems no one had a better 2012 than the makers of Catfish. Nev and crew will be pursuing an entire new slate of internet hoaxsters this season, and we doubt they'll run out anytime soon.

Mystery girl to testify in Trayvon Martin murder case

By Barbara Liston

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - Prosecutors in the Florida murder trial of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman will reveal a star witness for the first time on Tuesday, the girl Trayvon Martin was talking with in the last minutes of his life.

The teenage girl, known as Witness #8 until now, was due to testify about what Martin, the unarmed black 17-year-old shot and killed by Zimmerman last year, told her what he saw that night.

Identified in court on Monday only as Rachel, a friend of Martin from Miami, she received a running account about what was happening, starting when he noticed a man, Zimmerman, watching him in the gated central Florida community he was visiting.

Zimmerman, 29 and part Hispanic, was a neighborhood watch volunteer in the Retreat at Twin Lakes community in Sanford at the time of the February 26, 2012, killing. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and could face life imprisonment if convicted.

The racially charged case triggered civil rights protests and debates about the treatment of black Americans in the U.S. justice system, since police did not arrest Zimmerman for 44 days.

To win a conviction for second-degree murder, the prosecution must convince jurors that Zimmerman acted with "ill will, hatred, spite or an evil intent," and "an indifference to human life," according to Florida jury instructions.

In previous written testimony, Rachel described Martin as scared and trying to get away from the man. She was urging him to run. She last heard Martin say, "why are you following me" after which she said she heard what sounded like Martin falling. Then the phone line went dead.

The Martin family lawyer, Ben Crump, has said her testimony helps destroy Zimmerman's claim that he acted in self-defense.

Zimmerman placed a four-minute phone call to police when he first spotted Martin, telling a dispatcher that the Miami teen looked "real suspicious."

Martin was a student at a Miami-area high school and a guest of one of the homeowners. He was walking back to the house after buying snacks at a nearby convenience store when he was shot in the chest during a confrontation with Zimmerman.

Also on Tuesday, lawyers will continue to dissect witness testimony about Zimmerman's call to police. Jurors heard the 'suspicious person' call three times on Monday, twice during the opening statements and again during witness testimony.

In opening statements Monday, the prosecution portrayed Zimmerman as a man with a concealed weapon who committed a vigilante-style killing. The defense suggested that Martin was the aggressor, and Zimmerman acted to protect his own life.

Six jurors, all women, were selected last week to hear the case. Florida law requires a minimum of six jurors except in cases where the death penalty is sought.

Under Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which was approved in 2005 and has since been copied by about 30 other states, people fearing for their lives can use deadly force without having to retreat from a confrontation, even when it is possible.

Seeking a Syria consensus despite US-Russia divide

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Hunting for a glimmer of common ground, the leaders of major economic powers are declaring themselves dedicated to a political solution to Syria's bloody civil war, even as President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin stake out diametrically opposite stands on which side deserves military support.

Ahead of a Group of Eight joint statement on Syria to be issued Tuesday, the U.S. remained committed to Obama's recent decision to arm the rebels and Russia did not budge from its weapons sales to President Bashar Assad's regime.

Yet even as Obama found common ground among European allies against Putin at a G-8 summit in Northern Ireland, the U.S. president also struggled to convince some of those same allies to join him in sending armaments to the Syrian opposition.

Syria, where at least 93,000 people have been killed in the conflict, has emerged as one of the intractable issues at the G-8 in Northern Ireland, where leaders of eight of the wealthiest economies gathered at a gleaming lakeside golf resort to hash over trade, tax and foreign policy challenges.

"Of course, our opinions do not coincide, but all of us have the intention to stop the violence in Syria, to stop the growth of victims, and to solve the situation peacefully," Putin said after meeting for two hours with Obama. "We agreed to push the parties to the negotiations table."

"We do have differing perspectives on the problem," Obama concurred. "But we share an interest in reducing the violence; securing chemical weapons and ensuring that they're neither used nor are they subject to proliferation; and that we want to try to resolve the issue through political means, if possible."

In an interview on PBS that was taped Sunday and aired late Monday, Obama was much blunter, and pessimistic.

"What's been clear is that Assad, at this point ? in part, because of his support from Iran and from Russia ? believes that he does not have to engage in a political transition, believes that he can continue to simply violently suppress over half of the population," Obama told interviewer Charlie Rose. "And as long as he's got that mindset, it's going to be very difficult to resolve the situation there."

Even so, Obama in the interview portrayed himself as a reluctant participant in the civil war.

"We know what it's like to rush into a war in the Middle East without having thought it through," he said in obvious reference to the war in Iraq.

British officials said Prime Minister David Cameron was looking for consensus among the G-8 members on five areas of potential agreement that could win Russian support, including a declaration to not tolerate the use of chemical weapons, pursuing extremists and creating an executive authority for Syria after it undergoes a political transition.

Discussions on the exact language were still underway Tuesday after the leaders conferred about Syria at dinner late Monday.

"Our objective absolutely remains to progress towards a political solution which results in a transitional government and we don't believe Assad will have a role to play in a transitional government," said Cameron spokesman Jean-Christophe Gray.

But despite their shared belief that Assad must leave power, the U.S., Britain and France were also showing cracks in their unity. Britain and France appear unwilling ? at least for now ? to join President Barack Obama in arming the Syrian rebels, a step the U.S. president reluctantly finalized last week.

Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, downplayed those differences, saying the Syrian opposition could be strengthened either politically, through humanitarian aid or as a military force.

"Different nations are going to feed into that process in different ways," he said.

The G-8 leaders were all smiles Tuesday morning as they walked in unison under cloud-covered skies at the lodge, where they posed for a "family photo" in front of a lake before Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper set off for a walk. Talks on how to combat corporate tax-dodging balanced out the effort to find some modicum of consensus on Syria in the waning hours of the summit as the leaders huddled in meetings and at a working lunch.

The sensitive Syria discussions unfolded in the midst of awkward revelations that the British eavesdropping agency GCHQ tapped into the communications of foreign diplomats during the 2009 Group of 20 summit in London, including those of Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev. That report, in the newspaper The Guardian, came on the heels of reports about the high-tech surveillance methods and record-gathering employed by the National Security Agency in the United States.

While the disclosures added a layer of controversy to the summit, U.S. officials said heads of state at a summit like the G-8 are perfectly aware that such spying goes on. As for the issue coming up in talks with Putin, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters, "It was a non-event at this meeting."

Indeed, in his interview with PBS, Obama made it clear such eavesdropping is commonplace, and tried to distinguish it from the cyber-hacking his administration has accused China of carrying out.

"There is a big difference between China wanting to figure out how can they find out what my talking points are when I'm meeting with the Japanese, which is standard fare, and we try to prevent them from penetrating that, and they try to get that information," he said. "There's a big difference between that and a hacker directly connected with the Chinese government or the Chinese military breaking into Apple's software systems to see if they can obtain the designs for the latest Apple product. That's theft."

It was a remarkably direct accusation coming just a week after Obama met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a desert resort in California.

"We had a very blunt conversation about cybersecurity," Obama said of his talks with Xi.

With Putin, Obama also tried to emphasize their areas of cooperation, including an extension of a 1992 agreement designed to curtail the spread of nuclear weapons. The agreement resolved Russian concerns that the original post-Soviet pact, named after Senate sponsors Democrat Sam Nunn and Republican Richard Lugar, was too intrusive in securing material from Russia. Rhodes said the deal allows both countries to cooperate on nuclear security in the U.S. and Russia, but also in other countries. Obama is likely to draw attention to the deal in a speech Wednesday in Berlin.

Still, relations between Obama and Putin have never been warm. Rhodes called the encounter between the two "businesslike," one made even more stilted through translation.

Obama tried to leaven their joint appearance before reporters at the end of their talks by observing that "we compared notes on President Putin's expertise in judo and my declining skills in basketball. And we both agreed that as you get older it takes more time to recover."

Putin, through an interpreter, replied, "The president wants to relax me with his statement of age."

World War Z 'Mega Ticket' trial brings early screenings, bonuses for $50

World War Z 'Mega Ticket' trial brings early screenings, bonuses for $50 tomorrow

Now that viewers can get excellent movie theater experiences at homes, studios and theaters are trying different strategies to keep bringing them in. Tomorrow night, Paramount will try a new tactic: offering buyers of its $50 "Mega Ticket" an early viewing of World War Z in 3D, plus a pair of collectible 3D glasses, a movie poster, an HD digital copy of the movie when it's available on Blu-ray, and a small (seriously?) popcorn. We're not sure if making it more expensive to go to the movies is the right way to go, but maybe it's worth it for those who are really hyped about the film. The viewing is only available at a few Regal Theaters, listed after the break if if you're interested in what's listed as $75 worth of value.

The Massive Facial Recognition Database That's Hiding in Plain Sight

It's only natural to be a little skeeved out by the idea that the government is slurping up your private data behind the scenes, but there's a very public piece of your data being collected as well: the look on your face. There's already a national database of over 120 million faces, and the Washington Post reports that it's slowly turning into the ultimate police tool.

When it comes to mammals, how big is too big?

June 16, 2013 ? Mammals vary enormously in size, from weighing less than a penny to measuring more than three school buses in length. Some groups of mammals have become very large, such as elephants and whales, while others have always been small, like primates. A new theory developed by an interdisciplinary team, led by Jordan Okie of Arizona State University, provides an explanation for why and how certain groups of organisms are able to evolve gigantic sizes, whereas others are not.

The international research team composed of palaeontologists, evolutionary biologists and ecologists examined information on how quickly an individual animal grows and used it to predict how large it may get over evolutionary time. Their research is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The new theory developed from the observation that some animals live fast and die young, while others take their time and mature much later. This is called the slow-fast life-history continuum, where "fast" animals -- such as mice -- breed very quickly, while humans mature slowly and are relatively older when they first have children. The theory proposes that those species that are relatively faster are more likely to evolve a large size quicker than slow species, and that their maximum size will be greater.

The research team tested their theory using the fossil records of mammals over the last 70 million years, examining the maximum size of each mammal group throughout that time, including whales, elephants, rodents, seals and primates. They found that their theory was very well supported.

"Primates have evolved very slowly, and never got bigger than 1,000 pounds," said Okie, an exploration postdoctoral fellow in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at ASU. "The opposite was true of whales, which evolved their large size at the fastest rates recorded."

The theory also makes predictions about the relative risks of extinction for large animals compared to small. The maximum size of an animal is limited by the rate of mortality in the population. Because larger animals tend to breed less frequently than smaller animals, if the mortality rate doubles, the maximum size is predicted to be 16 times smaller.

"This is a really surprising finding," said co-author Alistair Evans of Monash University (Melbourne, Australia). "It points to another reason why many of the large animals went extinct after the last Ice Age, and their high risk of extinction in modern environments."

The research clarifies some of the differences among the main groups of mammals and makes further predictions about how changes in body size affect the evolutionary potential. In the future, this work will be extended to help explain how extinction risk may be reduced in changing climates.

The team was funded by a Research Coordination Grant from the US National Science Foundation. Financial support to Okie was provided by an Exploration Postdoctoral Fellowship from Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration and a National Aeronautics and Space Administration Astrobiology Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Venezuela's cardinal: Pope should urge coexistence

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Pope Francis should pressure President Nicolas Maduro to focus on the promotion of democracy and peaceful coexistence to help ease tensions sparked by the South American country's political and economic crisis, the Catholic Church's top representative in Venezuela said Sunday.

Cardinal Jorge Urosa said he expected the pontiff would try to persuade Maduro during their scheduled meeting Monday at the Vatican to cease his verbal attacks against political rivals and critics

The cardinal said he hopes to see "increased serenity and impartiality in the president's language" following the meeting.

"Hopefully when (Maduro) returns he will use much more calm and democratic language, and also recognizes the existence and importance of those who belong to the opposition," said Urosa, speaking during a televised interview broadcast by the privately-owned Globovision channel.

It will be the president's first meeting with the new pope, who has called on Venezuela's political rivals to work toward reconciliation after the April 14 presidential election that Maduro won by a thin margin.

The relationship between Maduro and leaders of Venezuela's Catholic Church has not been friendly, but the president appears to be attempting to improve ties with the church, which wields enormous influence among Venezuelans of all political leanings.

His initiative represents a break from the rocky relations under late president Hugo Chavez, who once suggested that Christ would whip some church leaders for lying after Urosa warned that Venezuela's democratic freedoms were being eroded.

Maduro frequently insults his opponents, accusing them of attempting to undermine his government.

Adversaries say Maduro uses authoritarian tactics in an effort to weaken the opposition movement following his razor-thin electoral victory over challenger Henrique Capriles. Opponents say the government is using prosecutors and judges as pawns to bring politically motivated criminal charges against government foes.

Capriles claims the election was fraudulent.

Last week, Capriles sent a letter to Pope Francis denouncing the government for persecuting its opponents and attempting to discredit its critics. He also warned the pontiff that Maduro is cracking down on Venezuela's independent media to try to silence dissent.

Capriles also thanked Pope Francis for expressing his concern regarding Venezuela's political crisis and agreeing to meet with Edgar Zambrano, an opposition lawmaker who has been pressuring the government to release government adversaries who claim they have been unjustly imprisoned for political reasons.

Mitakon Lens Turbo

Since the introduction of the Micro Four Thirds systems, enthusiast shooters have been mounting legacy lenses to modern cameras for economic and artistic reasons alike. But, aside from the $6,950 Leica M there hasn't been a compact full-frame digital body that could take advantage of older lenses designed for use with 35mm film.

The Mitakon Lens Turbo ($198 direct) aims to change that. It features a wide-angle rear converter, which effectively widens the field of view of the camera's sensor by 0.726x. It almost completely negates the 1.5x crop factor that shooters who uses 35mm film lenses on APS-C bodies have become accustomed to. Because it concentrates the light from the lens into a smaller-than-normal image circle, it also effectively increases the amount of light hitting the sensor, giving the lens a larger effective aperture than it would normally have.

Design and Features
The Lens Turbo is actually the second of its type to hit the market?the first was the Metabones Speed Booster?but it's the first one that we've been able to test. The Metabones version gives you a slightly wider field of view, and is available for Sony NEX and Fujifilm X mirrorless camera systems. Its magnification is 0.71x, but it's priced between $400 and $450, depending on which adapter you require. The Metabones is available for Alpha, Contarex, Contax C/Y, and Leica R lenses.

You'll need a Sony NEX camera like the excellent NEX-6 in order to take advantage of the Lens Turbo; Fujifilm and other mirrorless camera systems are not supported. We tested a version that is compatible with Nikon lenses, but you can opt for one in a Canon FD, Minolta MD/MC, or Pentax K mount if you choose. Mitakon has plans to release versions for M42, Leica R, Contax C/Y, and Sony/Minolta Alpha lenses in the future.?

The adapter's depth will vary a bit by mount, but each is machined to match the native camera system's flange distance (the distance between the lens mount and the image sensor) in order to allow proper focus to infinity. Expect it to add a couple inches to the front of your NEX. You mount it just as you would any other lens, and there is a tab on the front of the adapter itself to allow you to attach and detach the lens that you'd like to use. The adapter itself is metal and is quite sturdy?it locks securely onto the camera, and the wiggle that you sometimes get with cheap adapters is nowhere to be found.

Performance and Conclusions
We tested the Nikon mount version of the adapter along with the Nikkor AI-s 28mm f/2.8 lens. This is regarded as one of Nikon's sharpest manual focus wide-angle optics, and it has an amazing close focus ability; it can hone in on a subject that's only 7 inches away from the image sensor. To understand just how sharp it could be on a native Nikon body we used Imatest to measures its performance on the 36-megapixel D800.

We use 1,800 lines per picture height as the cutoff for acceptable sharpness using a center-weighted metric; at f/2.8 the 28mm AI-s managed 2,341 lines. There was some barrel distortion, about 0.6 percent, and edge performance was a bit lacking?it drops to 1,569 lines in the outer edges of the frame, about 56 percent of what it was in the center area. Stopping down improved performance; at f/4 we got an average score of 2,724 lines with 1,734 at the edges. At f/5.6 it's impeccable, 3,012 average with edges managing 2,136 lines; the drop-off from center to edge improved to 61 percent here. Finally, at f/8, we saw an average score of 3,096 lines with edges at 2,472?the edges were 73 percent as sharp as the center.

Those are a lot of numbers. And since we tested the Lens Turbo adapter on a 16-megapixel NEX-5N, a direct score comparison to the 36-megapixel D800 isn't exactly fair. At f/2.8 the center-weighted score is only 1,534 lines. The center is actually quite sharp at 1,975 lines, but the edge resolution is a dismal 557 lines, about 28 percent that of the center. Stopping down to f/4 doesn't move the needle much, but we do see improvement at f/5.6. There the lens scores 1,717 lines overall, with 2,170 lines in the center and 590 lines at the edges. The drop-off percentage is about the same. The lens did better at f/8, notching an 1,827-line average with 2,153 lines at the center and 826 at the edges?the edge score is about 38 percent of that of the center.

What does all that mean? Basically, you're sacrificing some image quality at the center and mid-center of your image in order to gain the wider field of view. And you can forget about getting sharp corners. If corner-to-corner sharpness is what you're after, this adapter is simply not going to work for your needs. It's also not a good one for architectural work?the adapter introduces a noticeable amount of barrel distortion to your images. Our Nikkor test showed only 0.6 percent on the D800, but exhibited a noticeable 1.8 percent when paired with the Lens Turbo and the NEX-5N.

In terms of exposure, the Lens Turbo increases the effective f-stop of your lenses by about a two-thirds of a stop. An exposure at ISO 100 under identical lighting conditions required a 1/30-second exposure with the Nikon D800, but only required 1/50-second using the Lens Turbo adapter on the NEX-5N. We tested the adapter with a relatively slow f/2.8 lens, but if you pair it with an f/1.4 or an ultra-fast f/1.2 lens you'll be able to snap photos at higher shutter speeds in very little light.

The Mitakon Lens Turbo has a limited target market, but if you're the right type of photographer it's worth your money. If you're a NEX shooter who likes using legacy lenses, you'll now be able to get more out of older, manual focus glass. We tested with a Nikon lens, one that is actually compatible with modern full-frame digital cameras. But if you've got a stash of Canon FD or Minolta MD/MC lenses, you won't find any digital body that offers native support. And Pentax K shooters, who are still without a full-frame body, will be able to adapt legacy lenses and enjoy a full-frame experience. While the adapter clearly harms image quality, it doesn't do so to the point where the images are unusable. I was shooting outdoors on a bright day and had the option to stop the lens down as needed. Even at wider apertures I was able to get images out of the adapter that I'd be happy to print, and print large.

Donna Shalala, Miami Hurricanes brace for NCAA hearings

On the eve of the University of Miami?s hearing with the NCAA Committee on Infractions, Sports Illustrated released excerpts from its expos? about college sports? governing body and its investigation into the Hurricanes? athletics program, including allegations from former booster Nevin Shapiro that he received inside information from coaches to win bets on 23 football games between 2005 and ?09.

According to SI, Shapiro supplied the magazine with financial statements and bank records from 2005 to ?08 that show dozens of five- and six-figure sums moving from Shapiro?s entities to sports handicapper Adam Meyer?s accounts during the college football season. Meyer is the operator of a website AdamWins.com. Meyer?s lawyer, Joel Hirschhorn, told SI that Meyer would place bets for Shapiro when his client was in Las Vegas.

Shapiro told the magazine that several days before favored UM lost 19-16 to N.C. State on Nov.?3, 2007, he learned from a coach that quarterback Kyle Wright would be benched because of a bad knee and ankle. Shapiro said he placed his bet before the benching became public, and the betting line moved from 13 points to 11. SI says records show that six days after the game, nine wire transfers moved $1.18 million from one Shapiro business to another. Shapiro, who told SI he got his inside information from two members of the coaching staff, claims the $1.18 million is from the N.C. State gamble he won.

Why is Shapiro divulging this information to SI now? As Alexander Wolff wrote in Wednesday?s column: ?Shapiro hopes to do with the federal government what he never got to do with the NCAA, because the enforcement division?s arrangement with [lawyer Elena] Perez, which [NCAA president Mark] Emmert called ?shocking,? stopped the Miami case in its tracks. He wants to walk investigators through those bank records. If the Feds look into Shapiro?s gambling, they might find crimes adjacent to it that involve others. And by cooperating he might get his 20-year sentence reduced.?

These allegations, however, are not part of what the eight-person infractions committee will hear when it meets when UM representatives and NCAA investigators Thursday through Saturday at a downtown hotel.

SI said emails from earlier this year obtained by the magazine between Shapiro and an NCAA investigator make it clear that Shapiro wouldn?t consent to an interview with the NCAA to discuss his gambling on Miami games after the NCAA balked at paying for his attorney to attend the interviews. It should be noted, though, that the NCAA did look into gambling allegations, asking former UM assistant equipment manager Sean ?Pee Wee? Allen questions about it through Shapiro?s attorney.

The NCAA is expected to ignore the SI report. Re-opening the investigation seems unlikely because the NCAA already has explored the gambling allegation and found nothing.

UM president Donna Shalala and a group of about a dozen other staffers ? including football coach Al Golden, basketball coach Jim Larranaga and athletic director Blake James ? flew to Indianapolis early Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the hearings. Former UM basketball assistants Jorge Fernandez and Jake Morton and former receivers coach Aubrey Hill, who face individual charges, were also seen pacing around the hotel where the meetings are scheduled to take place.

In addition to the allegations from Shapiro, the SI article titled ?The Institution Has Lost Control? (set to be released in magazines Thursday) also touches on the ?atmosphere of instability, distrust and tension in the NCAA?s enforcement division? since Emmert took office in October 2010.

Among the findings, according to SI after months of interviews with more than 20 current and former NCAA staffers: New performance metrics that pressure NCAA investigators to try to solve cases more quickly (12 months was the expectation); Emmert?s public comments on ongoing cases has disheartened staffers; and college presidents have more direct access with Emmert to discuss cases involving their schools.

?People are questioning the need and effectiveness of an enforcement staff in general to the point that I wonder if the membership will say we don?t want it,? former NCAA enforcement rep Abigail Grantstein told SI.

Grantstein was fired during the organization?s eligibility probe of UCLA freshman basketball star Shabazz Muhammad after her boyfriend was heard loudly discussing Muhammad?s case on an airplane in August last year, before key facts of the case had been gathered.

?The time is ripe to cheat,? an ex-enforcement staffer told SI. ?There?s no policing going on.?

Astronomers gear up to discover Earth-like planets

June 6, 2013 ? As part of an international team of exoplanets hunters, astronomers at the UA are developing a technique to detect faint dust clouds around other stars, many of which might hide Earth-like planets.

If one looks only for the shiniest pennies in the fountain, chances are one misses most of the coins because they shimmer less brightly. This, in a nutshell, is the conundrum astronomers face when searching for Earth-like planets outside our solar system.

Astronomers at the University of Arizona are part of an international team of exoplanets hunters developing new technology that would dramatically improve the odds of discovering planets with conditions suitable for life -- such as having liquid water on the surface.

The team presented its results at a scientific conference sponsored by the International Astronomical Union in Victoria, British Columbia.

Terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars often are concealed by vast clouds of dust enveloping the star and its system of planets. Our solar system, too, has a dust cloud, which consists mostly of debris left behind by clashing asteroids and exhaust spewing out of comets when they pass by the sun.

"Current technology allows us to detect only the brightest clouds, those that are a few thousand times brighter than the one in our solar system," said Denis Defr?re, a postdoctoral fellow in the UA's department of astronomy and instrument scientist of the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, or LBTI.

He explained that while the brighter clouds are easier to see, their intense glare makes detecting putative Earth-like planets difficult, if not impossible. "We want to be able to detect fainter dust clouds, which would dramatically increase our chances of finding more of these planets."

"If you see a dust cloud around a star, that's an indication of rocky debris, and it increases the likelihood of there being something Earth-like around that star," said Phil Hinz, an associate professor of astronomy at the UA's Steward Observatory.

"From previous observations, we know that these planets are fairly common," he added. "We can expect that if a space telescope dedicated to that mission were to look around a certain area of sky, we'd expect to find quite a few."

Hinz and Defr?re are working on an instrument that will allow astronomers to detect fainter clouds that are only about 10 times -- instead of several thousand times -- brighter than the one in our solar system.

"It's like being here in Victoria and trying to image a firefly circling a lighthouse in San Francisco that is shrouded in fog," Defr?re said about the technological challenge.

"That level of sensitivity is the minimum we need for future space telescope missions that are to characterize Earth-like planets that can sustain liquid water on the surface," he explained. "Our goal is to eliminate the dust clouds that are too bright from the catalog of candidates because they are not promising targets to detect planets suitable for life."

"With a bright dust cloud, which is 1,000 times brighter than the one in our solar system, its light becomes comparable to that of its star, which makes it easier to detect," explained Hinz.

Fainter clouds, on the other hand, can be about 10,000 times less bright than their star, so it becomes difficult or impossible for observers to make out their faint glow in the star's overpowering glare.

Funded by NASA, the team is in the middle of carrying out tests to demonstrate the feasibility of these observations using both apertures of the Large Binocular Telescope, or LBT, in Arizona. The project aims at determining how difficult it would be to achieve the desired results before committing to a billion-dollar space telescope mission.

According to Hinz, NASA's goal is to be able take a direct picture of Earth-like, rocky planets and record their spectrum of light to analyze their composition and characteristics such as temperature, presence of water and other parameters.

"To do that, one would need a space telescope specifically designed for this type of imaging," he said. "Our goal is to do a feasibility study of whether it would be possible to distinguish the light emission of the planet from the background emission of the dust cloud through direct observation."

The researchers take advantage of a technique known as nulling interferometry and the unique configuration of the LBT, which resembles a giant pair of binoculars.

"We combine the light from two apertures, cancel out the light from the central star, and with that it becomes easier to see the light from the dust cloud," Hinz explained. "To achieve this, we have to cause the two light paths to interfere with each other, which requires lining them up with very high precision. We'll always have some starlight left because of imperfections in the system, but our goal is to cancel it out to a level of 10,000 to get down to where we can at least detect the faint glow of the dust cloud."

The work presented at the conference used the same technique with the two large telescopes of the Keck Observatory in Hawaii in order to detect the dust cloud around the star Fomalhaut located 25 light years from our sun.

"Based on our observations at the European Very Large Telescope Interferometer, we knew that Fomalhaut was surrounded by a bright dust cloud located very close to the star," said J?r?my Lebreton, principal investigator of the study, who is at the Institut de Plan?tologie et d'Astrophysique in Grenoble, France.

"Using the Keck Interferometer, we found out that Fomalhaut has a less bright, more diffuse cloud orbiting close to the habitable zone that resembles the Main Asteroid Belt in our solar system. This belt is likely in dynamical interaction with yet undetected planets."

The study presented here is one in a series of three publications and was conducted in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam; the University of Li?ge in Belgium; NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, Pasadena, Calif.; the University of Paris; and the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
