sorrow, joy, past experiences, happiness, coping, grieving-HUMAN ...

We spend so much time trying to be?happy. Humans. We do. We really do. Yes, we ALL have those funks?that we stay in for a while; but in reality?cynicism?is exhausting. Being bitter, harsh, sad, angry, and cynical will eat you alive more than the actual debilitating pain that causes you to feel and be this way.

At some point we will either cope through goodness, great people, friendships, maturity, or religion. Sometimes all of them. Sometimes one of them. Whatever works for you. Then, once there, we will strive SO HARD to be?that ?Better me.? Some of it will burn us out. Some of it will push us forward??todo?pa?lante? and thrive. Some of us will become obsessed with this help, whatever it is pushing us forward, uplifting us; helping us in our sorrow. Many of us will fall somewhere in the middle with rises and dips in there.

I?m stuck currently?in HUMAN. Human who happens to be?woman, mom, Muslim, my past and all I?ve been through. Some days I?m a striving-to-improve Muslimah above everything else. Some days I barely get by, and a Hug from my child is all I can bare. Some days, some days even that is harder than I can take, harder than I can bare. Some days your legs over the side of the bed is the BIGGEST accomplishment you can envision yourself to take.

I?ve been very pensive lately. Life sure is a roller coaster ride. I reflect?on the amazing qualities of the brain, at it?s amazing?features all it can learn, take, how amazingly resilient and how terribly fragile it is. I think of?depression,?schizophrenia, Autism, Retts?syndrome, Cancer, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and all the people whose minds and souls have been ravaged?by life and who pretend to be ?normal? and get by.

Life is all over the place, like my thoughts.

I think of all the?imperfect?mistakes that shaped us. The experiences we never should have had which taught us. The dumb a** mistakes we make that can forever change our youth, you, our marriages, or our lives. We all have them. Some of us, wiser than others; have fewer. Some of us have many life experiences and learn the hard way.

Some of us have lost a pet, a friend, a family member some of us have lost all of them and a child or a parent. Some of us have lost all that and more, in a Hard way. Some of us have seen murder, cancer, war,?psychosis, ptsd, a child fall asleep in our arms to never wake up, a child dying in a fire, a sister murdered, a brother who couldn?t take it and ended it?.some of us, some of us would have went through the feelings of that last one and somehow made it through. AlHamdulilahl, AlHamdulilah through it all.

Reflecting on some things of my own, of my my friends?, of my family.

How hard can it be to be looked up to and admit you?want?to give up or mess up, or try something bad? Wondering how would someone admit that to another? How do you seek help before falling into that? Whatever?that?may be?

How does a family survive loosing their ?Captain?? How does a mother cope with empty arms? How does a sister get through not being able to pick up the phone? How does a sinner return to their faith, their rope? How does a mother, hugging her whose child having a?seizure?stay in the moment with the heavy weight on her shoulders of just finding out she has a rare form of cancer out of?nowhere?and is already in a stage 2? How does a wife regain her husband?s love? How does a drug addict get over the urge to just slip one more time? How do we cope in this amazing, awful, happy, depressing, horrible, fun, disgusting, sick, hopeful world?

These are all rhetorical questions I don?t really want your answers. I?m just using my blog as a diary of sorts so to speak. I know how I cope, most days anyhow. AlHamdulilah for Islam, the internet and some confidants, companions, my musings and the internet. That?s mine. Sometimes. Sometimes it?s just another thing that I ?fail at?. Sometimes. Sometimes I?m just a shell. and sometimes that?s okay.

Shout out to all my shells. To my struggling to get by people. Shout out to the grieving, to the recovering, shout out to the muslims striving, Shout out to the hurt, the attacked, the?defeated?and then to those who have slacked and slipped up and relapsed. The ONLY way to go from the bottom is up. Rejoice, rejoice that you can be?an example of starting over. No matter what it is. How hard it may be, how utterly life shattering it is or was you CAN be you. Be you in this awesome life. Be you. Relish those things that made you who you are and keep on?keepin?on.

California surfer killed in shark attack

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.?A California surfer was killed Tuesday by a shark off a beach at coastal Vandenberg Air Force Base, authorities said.

The attack was reported by another surfer about 11 a.m. off the coast of Surf Beach in Lompoc, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

The victim "had a friend who he was surfing with who saw the shark bite or hit the man," said sheriff's Sgt. Mark A. Williams. "His friend ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid."

The friend started first aid while another surfer called for help, but the male victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

The Air Force said only that the victim was 38 years old and was not affiliated with the base, which allows public access to some of its beaches.

The type of shark involved and other details were under investigation.

Williams said the man's identity will be released after his next of kin are notified.

It was the latest shark attack fatality at Surf Beach, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

In October 2010, Lucas Ransom, a 19-year-old student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, died when a shark nearly severed his leg as he body-boarded.

Hundreds of miles south near the coast of San Diego, a 15-foot great white shark is believed to have killed triathlete David Martin in 2008.

Last month, warning signs were posted at Santa Barbara Harbor, about 65 miles southeast of Surf Beach, after a 14-foot great white shark was spotted by a surfer.

Similar shark sightings occurred along California's Central Coast throughout the summer and warnings were issued.

In July, a man escaped injury near Santa Cruz after being thrown from his kayak by a great white shark that bit through the vessel. An almost identical incident occurred off the coast of Cambria in May.

South Africa, Congo to Cooperate On Oil Exploration

PRETORIA - South Africa and Congo signed a deal Tuesday for the joint exploration of hydrocarbons in Congo, the two countries said.

The deal was signed by each country's state-controlled oil company, Cohydro in Congo and PetroSA in South Africa, according to a statement from the foreign affairs ministers of both countries.

The chief executive of PetroSA, Nosizwe Nokwe, said the deal is the first step in a cooperation on oil exploration. The CEO said each company will assess opportunities and then decide if they make economic sense to go forward. The two haven't allotted specific amounts of money to achieve this, nor has a time frame been agreed for the cooperation. PetroSA will start by selling oil to Congo because it can buy in bulk and get a better price to sell it on to Congo, she said.

Recent oil finds in eastern Africa have spurred more exploration across the continent as countries seek to become more energy independent.

Dogs Still Dying of Chinese Made Jerky Treats, Enough is Enough ...

By Steve Dale, today at 9:13 am

Dogs are dying of chicken jerky treats from China. . . and they don't need to be dying just because they've eaten a dog treat. ?For at least well over a year, something's been going with these Chinese made treats. Reportedly upwards of 400 dogs dead, likely twice as many or far more sickened.

While most dogs only wag their tails after chowing down chicken jerky, for far too many, it's another story. This should not be acceptable.

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine is aware of ?the problem,?and?has even visited China to determine exactly what that problem is. They can't get to the bottom of it.

So, while there's been some?publicity?(read my column), there's been no recall or even suggested recall. ?And those companies that make the treat - in some cases - even offer warnings on their websites, but continue selling what amounts products which might kill pets.

I suggest - simply stop buying chicken jerky treats made in China. Don't take the chance with your best friend. As an alternative there are a very small handfull of chicken jerky treats made here. Still, don't always trust packaging - though an alternative is one of the few products??made in the USA, and made this video?or simply buy one of a zillion other types of treats.

We speak to Siraj Datoo fromThe Students Journals | Brit Writers ...

We speak to Siraj Datoo, who?s organising a conference for students who are looking to break into journalism (and is also editor-in-chief of The Student Journals).

    ?

Who is Siraj, and tell us more about your background?

Ha, well that?s a complicated question to answer. Although I was born in New York, and also lived in Dar es Salaam for two years when I was very young, I was brought up in London and have spent most of my life there (very much in contrast with my ancestors who lived in India). I turned 22 a couple of weeks ago and after spending seven months in Le Mans (a city in the north-west of France) teaching as a language assistant, I?m now back to finish my final year of French with International Studies at the University of Warwick. The thing I miss most about France? The bread!

I?m also the founder and editor-in-chief of The Student Journals, an award-winning online magazine for students around the world.

    ?

    ?

What inspired you to set up The Student Journals?

    ?

The thing I love about the Warwick is that students have got a huge number of opportunities available to them ? there are so many societies to get involved in and events to help organise. My grounding, and the way I have been brought up has been very much about getting involved with, and giving back to, the community ? and so with so much happening, I threw myself into a number of societies, such as TEDxWarwick, One World Week and Warwick Entrepreneurs.

    ?

I have also always been interested in writing and although I have also written about various countries I have visited, I collate all my articles on my blog, which is mostly inundated with opinion articles about issues such as discrimination, human rights and international politics (France appears to pop up quite often). At the end of my first year, however, I thought about how many students there must be like me, who write but whose blog is mostly read only by their friends. That same night, I did some market research to find out whether anything existed (it didn?t, by the way), and called some friends up to get opinions. As soon as I got off the phone with Ali Gokal, who agreed to take on the role of Deputy Editor, I started drawing up some designs. A couple of months of web development later (for which I still owe Sadiq Datoo a huge amount of gratitude), and TheStudentJournals.com was born ? we moved to studentjournals.co.uk a few months later.

    ?

    ?

What exactly is The Student Journals?

    ?

TSJ is an online magazine that gives students around the world a platform to engage in political discussion and debate issues that matter to them, as well as interview personalities they would be interested in. We?ve had articles ranging from Sudanese independence to a number about the US elections (one of our big focus points at the moment) and arguably our biggest interviews have been with Kate Allen (Director, Amnesty International UK), football journalist Iain Macintosh, Economist?s editorial cartoonist Kal and world-famous foreign correspondent Robert Fisk. There are also sections for Education, Blogs, Culture, Features, and Lifestyle, and our culture section is performing outstandingly recently, with fresh reviews of films, theatre performances, music, and books.

    ?

    ?

Tell us about some of the challenges you?ve faced when setting this up?

    ?

Time! When the idea of TSJ came to me, I seem to have forgotten that I had a degree to do as well! Over time though, things got a little easier and I figured out how to manage time a little more effectively around my studies and working on the online magazine.

    ?

I suppose that money does unfortunately play a role having too. From to pay monthly fees for hosting, domains, running such a site doesn?t come cheap. I?ve been determined, however, to keep TSJ stick to its core and I think that I?ve managed to minimise costs while running an organisation that runs effectively. Getting advertising on the site as well as sponsorship is certainly something we hope for though as we look to expand.

    ?

When talking about challenges, I suppose it?s pretty important to talk about support we?ve received as well. As well as the core team, who do an outstanding job, our writers keep writing great content and to them I will always remain grateful. I can only hope that they?ve benefited from writing for us and we?re looking to show some of our appreciation during the TSJ Writers Awards ceremony next Saturday, at our ?breaking into journalism? conference.

    ?

    ?

What opportunities are there for people to get involved with The Student Journals?

    ?

There really are a huge number of opportunities available at TSJ. We have vacancies for a web editor, deputy editors, editorial assistants, live bloggers, photographers, broadcast journalists (whether it be TV or radio), and even positions in marketing and on the business team. We?re also always happy to have students around the world writing for us, and we?ve published articles from students based in the UK (of course), Canada, USA, Jordan, France and even South Africa. Any student can submit an article to the site, allowing their voice to be heard.

    ?

We?re also always looking to partner with organisations that are doing something different. In our first year, we partnered with TEDxWarwick and live blogged the event and interviewed some of the speakers. Since then, we?ve partnered with a number of organisations, and we hope to improve the way we portray digital media through this too, to create a more dynamic experience for writers.

    ?

    ?

How important are organisations such as Brit Writers?

    ?

How often do unpublished writers get the chance to be recognised for their work and have it showcased? The chances and opportunities are so rare that organisations such as the Brit Writers become treasured. Britain should be proud to have such an Awards Ceremony.

    ?

    ?

What?s this about a ?breaking into journalism? conference?

    ?

For the past few months, I?ve been working on a conference to bring decorated journalists together to help ?wannabe hacks? break into the industry. So next Saturday, the 27th October, when TSJ will celebrate its second year since launch, there will be some fantastic great speakers, including Carla Buzasi, editor-in-chief of Huffington Post UK, Jonathan Hewett, the director of Newspaper Journalism MA and Interactive Journalism MA at City Journalism School, as well as journalists from the Guardian, Telegraph, New Statesman, Channel 4 & many more speakers.

    ?

Attendees will be able to tailor the event according to their own interests through workshops, and a ?networking lunch?, where students can talk to the journalists present is definitely one that we?re sure will prove very useful and beneficial for any aspiring journalists.

    ?

Thanks to some generous sponsorship from City Journalism School, Warwick Knowledge Centre and the University of Warwick, we have been able to reduce ticket prices to only ?6. Entry includes a free copy of the Economist, New Statesman, and Prospect magazine (if you?re early enough for the latter), as well as coffee/tea/snacks and cake. We have attendees coming from across the UK (from Norwich and London to York, Nottingham and Edinburgh) and it will be a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded individuals too. It would be great to see of those interested in Brit Writers Awards, who are looking to go into journalism, turn up and I hope to see some next week! Evolution of new genes captured

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Like job-seekers searching for a new position, living things sometimes have to pick up a new skill if they are going to succeed. Researchers from the University of California, Davis, and Uppsala University, Sweden, have shown for the first time how living organisms do this.

The observation, published Oct. 19 in the journal Science, closes an important gap in the theory of natural selection.

Scientists have long wondered how living things evolve new functions from a limited set of genes. One popular explanation is that genes duplicate by accident; the duplicate undergoes mutations and picks up a new function; and, if that new function is useful, the gene spreads.

"It's an old idea and it's clear that this happens," said John Roth, a distinguished professor of microbiology at UC Davis and co-author of the paper.

The problem, Roth said, is that it has been hard to imagine how it occurs. Natural selection is relentlessly efficient in removing mutated genes: Genes that are not positively selected are quickly lost.

How then does a newly duplicated gene stick around long enough to pick up a useful new function that would be a target for positive selection?

Experiments in Roth's laboratory and elsewhere led to a model for the origin of a novel gene by a process of "innovation, amplification and divergence." This model has now been tested by Joakim Nasvall, Lei Sun and Dan Andersson at Uppsala.

In the new model, the original gene first gains a second, weak function alongside its main activity -- just as an auto mechanic, for example, might develop a side interest in computers. If conditions change such that the side activity becomes important, then selection of this side activity favors increasing the expression of the old gene. In the case of the mechanic, a slump in the auto industry or boom in the IT sector might lead her to hone her computer skills and look for an IT position.

The most common way to increase gene expression is by duplicating the gene, perhaps multiple times. Natural selection then works on all copies of the gene. Under selection, the copies accumulate mutations and recombine. Some copies develop an enhanced side function. Other copies retain their original function.

Ultimately, the cell winds up with two distinct genes, one providing each activity -- and a new genetic function is born.

Nasvall, Lei and Andersson tested this model using the bacterium Salmonella. The bacteria carried a gene involved in making the amino acid histidine that had a secondary, weak ability to contribute to the synthesis of another amino acid, tryptophan. In their study, they removed the main tryptophan-synthesis gene from the bacteria and watched what happened.

After growing the bacteria for 3,000 generations on a culture medium without tryptophan, they forced the bacteria to evolve a new mechanism for producing the amino acid. What emerged was a tryptophan-synthesizing activity provided by a duplicated copy of the original gene.

"The important improvement offered by our model is that the whole process occurs under constant selection -- there's no time off from selection during which the extra copy could be lost," Roth said.

The work was supported by the Swedish Research Council and the National Institutes of Health.

Google to Launch New Devices, Android 4.2 at Oct. 29 Event [REPORT]

Google will unveil several new devices and a software update at its scheduled Oct. 29 press event, according to a company video leaked from an all-hands meeting.

[More from Mashable: iPad Mini: All the Rumors]

The Next Web is reporting Google has distributed an internal video that details and confirms speculations about what might be revealed at the upcoming event.

The video reportedly discusses the launch of a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet, as well as one with 3G support. It also indicates Google is working with manufacturer Samsung to release a 10-inch tablet called "Nexus 10" that will run Android 4.2 ("Key Lime Pie"), and a Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG.

[More from Mashable: Google?s Disappointing Third Quarter [Infographic]]

Meanwhile, the new Android 4.2 mobile operating system will include a panoramic camera option and "tablet sharing" capabilities, which would allow more than one user to access the device with his own set of email and apps -- similar to how a family or business can switch between user settings on a Windows computer.

Earlier this week, Google sent invitations to the press for an Android event to be held in New York City. Although the invitation didn't detail what might occur, the tagline -- "the playground is open" -- suggests it will have to do with Google Play, the company's newly-rebranded Andriod Market.

The news came as Microsoft prepares for its Windows Phone 8 launch event, which will also be held on Oct. 29 -- and Apple gears up to unveil its rumored 7.85-inch iPad on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Google's new Samsung tablet is reportedly being filed under the name "Codename Manta." The device is expected to have a 2560?1600 pixel resolution and 300ppi, which is greater than the iPad's 264ppi.

Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG is said to tout a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor, a 1280x768 display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.

Family Safe After Smoke Detector Alerts Them of ... - Back to Home

A Grand Island family is thankful for their smoke detector on Friday after their house caught fire.

Darlene Penner and her grandkids smelled something odd Friday morning.

"When I got up I could smell something scorchy-smelling," Penner described.

Penner and her husband investigated, but couldn't find the source of the smell.

"There was no smoke in the main floor or fire or nothing we could see," she said.

It was only when the family's smoke detector went off that they went outside and noticed the smoke coming from their attic.

"Upon arrival we had smoke coming out of the eaves. The thermal imaging indicated a lot of heat in the attic area," said Captain Edward Carlin of the Grand Island Fire Department. "When we went inside, we found that the ceiling had burned through."

The fire department says it will need to investigative further, but that it appears an electrical issue caused the fire. Officials also noted that this fire was a prime example of the importance of smoke detectors.

"It's critical that every residence has a smoke detector, especially with the insulation we have nowadays that can separate the fire from the living area until it finally burns through and you get a rush of smoke," added Carlin.

An important lesson for everyone in the neighborhood: there can be fire without flames.

Customer Service is Not Passive, Be Active | Business 2 Community

In customer service you can go far. Really far. It?s an easy way to climb the corporate ranks and settle into a high level customer service management position or even make the jump into marketing or corporate training. Another reason why it?s an easy path? It?s an area flooded with people who have just settled.

    Customer Service Race

Think about it, customer service is seen as last resort. It?s people?s fall back job, it?s their makes-ends-meet mentality that makes customer service the perfect area for those who are passionate and active in achieving excellence in customer service. I recently discussed the key to succeeding professionally in customer service by getting results.

The successful in customer service are those who wake up before dawn to deliver customer service results instead of lazily strolling into the office dreading another day at work.

The customer service future belongs to those who create, develop, innovate, and add value to the bottom line. This doesn?t mean squeezing blood from a stone. Slave driving your customer service team is ALWAYS the wrong way to deliver customer service results. You get paid to manage, to lead, to mentor. You?re not a just a reaper. You are a sower, cultivator, and a harvester.

The success of your company has as much if not more to do with your performance as it does with the performance of the CEO and his or her senior team.http://www.themana.gr/wp-admin/post.php?post=4550&action=edit&message=10#

?[Unfortunately,] 50-80% of all middle managers fail to achieve the expectations of those who promote them.

-Jim Morris and Betsey Upchurch, BusinessKnowHow.com

You have a good thing going for you. You may not realize it, but you do. It doesn?t matter that you aren?t in your ideal career situation right now. Make it the ideal career situation. BE SO GOOD THEY CAN?T IGNORE YOU. Most of us have access to training, education, and technical skills development but we don?t use it. I constantly hear about the ?I want to??, ?I?m going to??, ?I?m thinking about?? and not enough of ?I?m doing.? and ?I did.?

Too many in middle management languish, never reaching their full potential because of the lack of needed support and attention needed to develop into management superstars. They?re not high enough in the ladder to get the senior and executive treatment, but not low enough in the ranks to be targeted by most corporate development training programs. A few forward thinking organizations have mentor programs available, but they?re few and far between. You?re mostly on your own.

Don?t be afraid to get out there and lead the way. No one is going to hand it all to you. No one is going to do it for you. The more you are given, the less it means to you and even less will your accomplishments mean to those who gave it to you. Get out there and lead.

Dedicate yourself to a cause. Work with all of your energy. Master your craft. Perfect your profession. Then, and only then, will you see the fruits of your labor. Leadership and management are difficult and complex, but it?s an opportunity you have right now. Show initiative, be vocal, be proactive, be active, take a stand.

Baby Language DevelopmentEver wondered why your baby?s first words are something like ?ma? or ?ba?? Baby language development has a scientific and logical background and is much more extensive than you might have actually thought of. Making these vowel-like and consonant-vowel sounds and several other gestures are important indicators of baby language development.

With growing age, a baby?s language develops and achieves desirable milestones which can be crucial pointers of the normal growth pattern.?Language development happens in stages. Experts point out that there are certain indicators of baby language development.

    Tips For?Baby Language Development

    The Major Ones Include

    1. By the time your child is 3 months old, he may make ?cooing? sound, express surprise at loud noise and recognize your face.
    2. By the time he reaches 6 months of age, he may speak repetitive syllables (like ?ba?, ?ba?), express pleasure or discomfort using his voice and listen to music.
    3. By his first birthday, he may understand denial, copy words and turn into different directions.
    4. When he is one and half years old, he may say few words (8-10) and recognize familiar objects and people.
    5. By his second birthday, his vocabulary can increase multiple times, he can follow simple instructions and ask short (two word) questions.

It is important to encourage language development among babies, particularly during the first two years of life. Before a child can speak, language and use of new words and events can aid the learning process. Talking, singing and using gestures are vital components which can help your child master the art of language.

There are many other ways which can help you reach out and promote baby language development.?Some important ones have been mentioned here for your guidance. You may implement the milestones as a check list for observing and analyzing the language development.

If you find a noticeable deviation in the child?s learning and speech ability, talk to your doctor. Even though some children might be late learners, speech delay can be a crucial element in a child?s developmental phase.

Reinforce Attempts To Promote Development Through Gesture

Expert suggestion points to use of gestures in promoting language in babies. Maintenance of eye contact, response with speech and vocalization using different patterns are some significant ways to inculcate language development in babies. You can raise your voice?s pitch when asking a question, copy your baby?s laughter and facial expressions and wave goodbye to convey the meaning.

    Promote Development Through Gesture

While reinforcing attempts to learning speech, attach words to objects as labeling helps babies learn better. If you can engage your child with something which is already the focus of his interest, rather than trying to redirect attention, it can produce more meaningful results.

An important way of learning is through copying. Teach him to copy your actions like clapping hands and throwing kisses. When your child seems receptive, you can try the finger games like ?peek-a-boo? and the ?itsy-bitsy-spider?. Acting out songs helps babies learn to share the songs? movements. This may help them learn new words and facilitate their ability to hear and lean language.

Introduce animal sounds and associate a sound with specific meaning. The doggie saying ?woof-woof?, the cat saying ?meow-meow? and the snake saying ?hiss-hiss? can be good ones to start with. Use repetitions to enable your baby have more and more opportunities to learn a new word.

    Talk, Talk And Talk

Use more and more words to interact with your child. Use words to describe an action. Use words to convey your child?s actions. This can help him better understand the situation and relate with it. Talk when you bathe him or dress him. Talk about and while doing a thing. Introduce colors gradually.

    Read to Your Child

Reading performs manifold functions. Firstly, it promotes language development. Secondly, it enables spending quality time with your child to get that special feel of bonding. You may not read meticulously by following each and every line; reading can be simply a description of pictures in the book following a pattern of the mentioned story.

    Appreciate Attempts To Communicate

While reading, involve your baby and encourage pointing out familiar objects. Get good books with large pictorial representation without too much of detailing. Board books can be suited for babies and small children.

    Appreciate Attempts To Communicate

Even though you might feel that your child is too small to understand appreciation, provide generous acknowledgement when he tries to communicate and convey you something meaningfully.

As parents and caretakers, you have a crucial role to play in your child?s life. Your response and involvement with your baby can help in promoting his language development skills during the early years of learning which can remain throughout his life.
